Some off you might know this already, but some off you don't. 2009 is going to be the International Year of Astronomy. This will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, highlighted by the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei. The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme "The Universe, Yours to Discover". IYA2009 events and activities will promote a greater appreciation of the inspirational aspects of astronomy that embody an invaluable shared resource for all nations.

There are global projects but there's also national and local projects. These national and local projects can fit in the 11 cornerstones that the IAU (International Astronomic Union) has founded but that's not obligated. These cornerstones are:
- 100 hours of astronomy

- The Galileoscope

- Cosmic Diary

- The Portal to the universe

- She is an Astronomer

- Dark Skies Awareness

- Astro & World Heritage
- Galileo Teacher Training Program

- Universe Awareness

- From Earth to the Universe

- Developing Astronomy Globally

For more explanations about each cornerstone, just click on it and you are directed immediately to the corresponding page from the IYA2009 website.
Most of the cornerstones have a website on their own, these links can be founded on the IYA2009 website.
For the Facebook members among us, you can make yourself a member of the international Facebook page about IYA2009.
For some countries there's a IYA2009 page for their own. E.g. for Belgium which is to find on next [link] .
